Chimney sweeping in Plano
Sweeping is the cheapest thing on this list and the easiest to sell you twice. Here is what it removes, when it is genuinely needed, and the one time of year nobody can legally do it.
The deposit
Creosote, and how much of it Plano actually makes
Creosote is what condenses out of wood smoke when it cools against a flue wall. It arrives in three broadly recognized stages, and they are not equally serious. Stage one is a light soot that brushes off easily. Stage two is a harder, flaky, tar-like deposit. Stage three is glazed creosote, a hard shiny coating that a brush will not shift and that burns extremely hot if it ignites.
What produces the bad stages is a fire that smolders: unseasoned wood, a closed-down air supply, an oversized or cold exterior flue. What produces very little is a hot, well-drawing fire burning dry wood a handful of times a season, which describes most fireplaces in this city.
State that plainly, because the national advice, sweep annually, comes from a country that includes a great many houses heated by wood all winter. Plano is not that. The federal fire statistics still put chimneys at the center of heating fires: the U.S. Fire Administration found that confined fires, meaning those held inside a chimney, flue or fuel burner, accounted for 77% of residential building heating fires, and that heating fire incidence peaks in January. The risk is real. It is the frequency of the remedy that gets oversold.
The short list
When a sweep is actually indicated
- An inspection measured deposits at a depth that warrants it, and said so in writing.
- The fireplace has been burning regularly through a cold winter, or burning wood that was not properly seasoned.
- Smoke is spilling into the room, or the fire is hard to get going, which can mean a partial blockage rather than a technique problem.
- Anything has been living in the flue, which is far more common here than glazed creosote.
- The system is changing (a new appliance, a new liner) and the flue needs to be clean before it is scanned.
A federal rule with real teeth
Chimney swifts, and why summer sweeps get postponed
Chimney swifts nest inside masonry flues across Texas, and they are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Texas Parks and Wildlife puts it without qualification: it is illegal to remove or disturb chimney swifts, their nests, eggs or young during the breeding season.
TPWD's guidance to sweeps is to reschedule rather than clear the flue: at least six weeks for a chimney with eggs in it, at least four weeks for one with young, and preferably to leave it until late fall once the birds have migrated south. So if you call in June about a chattering noise in the chimney and a company offers to clear it out this week, that is not a company you want on your roof.
The right sequence is: leave them alone, book the sweep for late fall, and fit a cap at the same time so the flue is closed to wildlife the following spring. A capped flue also solves the larger of the two problems, which is rain. Mammals are a different matter and a different trade: a raccoon or a squirrel in a flue is a job for a wildlife removal operator, not something to smoke out from below.
On the day
What a competent sweep looks like
- Containment before brushing. A sealed cover over the fireplace opening and a vacuum running on the room side. Soot in a light-colored Plano living room is a bad afternoon.
- Brushes sized to the flue, and the right kind. A wire brush in a stainless liner will damage it, so a poly brush belongs there instead.
- The smoke shelf and smoke chamber cleared, not just the straight run of flue. That is where debris collects and where a rushed job stops.
- Photographs afterwards. A before-and-after up the flue costs the technician nothing and tells you what you bought.
- A finding, or an honest absence of one. If the sweep saw a cracked tile or a rusted damper, that belongs in writing rather than mentioned on the way out.
A sweep does not fix a chimney. It cleans it and it produces information. Everything structural that gets found belongs on an inspection report so you can decide about it calmly rather than while somebody is standing in your living room.

Questions about sweeping
Those chimney sweeping logs from the hardware store: do they work?
They can loosen some deposits, and they do nothing about nests, debris, a cracked tile or a failed crown. They are not a substitute for anyone looking at the chimney, which is the part that actually matters. Treat them as a supplement, not a service.
How much soot is too much?
The rule of thumb the trade uses is that deposits approaching an eighth of an inch warrant cleaning, and glazed creosote warrants attention at any thickness because a brush will not remove it. That judgment is what you are paying an inspector for; it is not something to eyeball from the hearth.
There is a smell but we never light it. Why?
Usually old deposits plus humidity, and it is worst when the air conditioning is running and the house is at negative pressure, pulling air down the flue instead of up. Will my house get dirty?
It should not. Containment and vacuum are basic practice, not an upgrade. Ask how they protect the room before booking, and if the answer is vague, ask someone else.
Do gas fireplaces need sweeping?
Not for creosote, because they do not make it in any quantity. They still need the flue clear of debris and nests, and the venting checked. It is a different job with a different point to it.
